Dear UULMNJ Supporters,
Our Ending New Jim Crow Task force has just issued this action alert.
These two important Senate bills are coming up for a vote on Monday.
Please take the time to email or call you State Senator, asking him/her to
support these critical bills. Email to day, A Monday morning call is not
too late.
I am at GA in Columbus, but felt it was important to get the out to
everyone. In fact, *this is critical!* Please circulate far and wide.
Thank you,
Craig
*TWO incredibly important bills are up for a vote by the full NJ Senate on
Monday- *
*S51 -- Solitary Confinement Restriction Act*
I don't think this bill needs too much "introduction" as you all have been
aware of it for awhile now. S51 was voted out of Senate Budget Committee
this week, and now a full Senate vote on Monday the 27th. Assembly bill
was introduced earlier this year but no action yet... so be sure to light a
fire under your Assemblypersons as well!
*S677-- Requiring Racial and Ethnic Impact Statements*
See the description below. A study by the Sentencing Project found that
our fair state of New Jersey is the WORST in the nation with regards to
racial disparities across all aspects of pre-trial detention, sentencing,
incarceration, parole and probation. TIME TO END THIS -- AND BE A BEACON
OF CHANGE FOR THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.
BRIEF OVERVIEW -- the bill requires that a racial and ethnic impact
statement for each *proposed criminal justice bill, resolution, or
amendment that would affect pretrial detention, sentencing, probation, or
parole policies in this State *be prepared prior to any vote being taken on
the bill, resolution, or amendment in either House of the Legislature.
Office of Legislative Services staff would be required to prepare the
statement. The racial and ethnic impact statement is to include a
statistical analysis of how the change in policy would affect racial and
ethnic minorities. State agencies would be required to provide relevant
data to assist the Office of Legislative Services in preparing these racial
and ethnic impact statements.
The bill also requires *all State agencies *to produce a racial and ethnic
impact statement for any proposed agency rule that affects pretrial
detention, sentencing, probation, or parole policies.
*You can paste the below link into your search bar, it will *
*take you to the NJ Legislature website for*
* contacting YOUR legislators:*
**

*Select all of your reps, and then compose a letter urging their support
for these two bills, telling them why they are ESSENTIAL as part of
reforming criminal justice system in NJ. If you select all your
legislators (Assembly and Senate) the one letter will go to all of them at
the same time.*
*Or, you can tailor a letter to your Assemblypeople-- urging them to move
the bill to Committee!-- and the to Senator, urging their YES vote on
Monday.*
*You can also call their legislative office and speak to an aide or **leave
a message. Better yet, do both!*
*PLEASE take 5 minutes right now to do this!!!*
Thanks to all of you.. SHARE THIS EMAIL WITH ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND
NETWORKS!!
