Program 1 in the Series on September 16

Critical Race Theory

Critical Race Theory (CRT) dominates too many news cycles to count these days. Legislators and politicians, afraid of the power behind the Black Lives Matter Movement and other racial justice organizing that arose after the murder of George Floyd, have attacked CRT as racism against white people.

Join us in this first of three webinars in our series, <https://livinglegacypilgrimage.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d736bf3a9136d183c55c837d0&id=273b331259&e=6717ab00a5> Speaking Truth: Countering Disinformation About Racial History. In this program on Critical Race Theory, we welcome three leading scholars at the forefront of this debate. Hosted by LLP Co-President Reggie Harris, our guests include Dr. Gerald Torres, Professor of Environmental Justice at the Yale School of the Environment, Dr. Sue (S.E.) Houchins, who holds an appointment in the Africana Program at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and Dr. Shameka Gerald, Director of Equity, Assessment & Strategic Operations for the Newport News Public Schools.

In this webinar, we’ll explore what CRT is, why it’s received so much backlash, and how you can speak clearly and factually to the arguments made against it.

Register for one, two or all three programs in the series! All programs are free and open to the public. Registration is required and donations are appreciated.

The Rev. Dr. Hope Johnson Legacy Fund

The Rev. Dr. Hope Johnson, our co-founder, president emerita, and friend, loved the Living Legacy Pilgrimage experience—the bus, the travel, the places, and, especially, the people—but it was so much more to her than that. Hope dreamed that the Living Legacy Project would become a leading organization in transforming lives for the work of justice through the spiritual practice of pilgrimage.

Your donations to The Rev. Dr. Hope Johnson Legacy Fund will be used to continue the vital mission Hope believed in so deeply: to provide experiential education about the American Civil Rights Movement that challenges, inspires, and equips people from diverse backgrounds and identities for justice work in their communities and beyond.

We are honored that the Johnson family has named the Living Legacy Project as the beneficiary of gifts made in her memory. In response, the Living Legacy Project Board has created The Rev. Dr. Hope Johnson Legacy Fund, which will help realize the LLP's vital mission that she spent so many years advancing.

Hope knew that this history must be preserved to inspire, encourage, and fortify those who continue the struggle for justice and equity. The Living Legacy Project Board will use the funds raised in Hope’s name to ensure the future of the LLP, so that the courage of Movement veterans will infuse new generations of activists with the strength and devotion needed to build Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream of a global Beloved Community.

That was Hope’s dream, too, and with your support, we will work tirelessly to make that dream come true.

If you'd like to talk with us about a substantial gift in Hope's honor, please contact our Director of Operations, Annette Marquis. We'd love to speak with you about it.

Renew your hopeful spirit as we head into the Fall

Inspired by the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Hope Johnson, who was born in Jamaica on September 7th, the Living Legacy Project Board has declared September 7 to October 6, 2021 as Thirty Days of Hope. We would like to engage with you in a conversation about hope, resilience, and the spirit to keep on, keepin' on. How do we work to change the world in the face of so much adversity? How do we renew our spirits, find new energy, and heal what needs to be healed, so we tackle the next project, the latest issue, the largest need?

This experiment in hope won't work without your participation. Over the next thirty days, we invite you to share your thoughts, resources, ideas, images, songs, stories, poetry, and artwork with the Living Legacy community. We would like to hear whatever it is that gives you hope.

We hope (see what we did there?) you'll join the conversation! Look for a post each day over the next month on <https://livinglegacypilgrimage.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d736bf3a9136d183c55c837d0&id=ecbcee14fb&e=6717ab00a5> our Facebook page and <https://livinglegacypilgrimage.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d736bf3a9136d183c55c837d0&id=d3da579408&e=6717ab00a5> on our website. We'd love to hear from you!

We will! We promise we will!

When will you be back on the bus?

That's a question we hear almost everyday. We know that many of you are hoping that we'll be able to offer Living Legacy Pilgrimages again sometime soon. We are too! However, most of our pilgrimages are focused in Alabama and Mississippi, and until the infection and hospitalization rates go down there, we will continue to focus our energies on virtual programming.

We are planning to take a group of college students on a Pilgrimage in January 2022. If that goes, we should be on track to offer our regular pilgrimages beginning in March 2022. We'll be sure to let you know.

In the meantime, join us online. We miss you and would love to hear from you!

Thanks for all your support! May you be well!
